In Costa Rica this species has been largely planted as a shade tree, especially for marketing their fruit, which is often seen in home yards. The flowers and fruits are found almost throughout the year.

For firewood, as shade tree, it is ideal for agricultural or agroforestry systems for rapid growth and large cup, which provides excellent coverage and litter production. The system of planting in streets, intermezclado with agricultural or forestry products, has produced successful results in wet soils and poor. The fruits are in great demand in local markets, both for its large size and plentiful and juicy flesh that surrounds the seeds.

Tree to 15 m tall; twigs densely ferruginous-tomentosa, lenticels, stipules up to 3 mm long. Fruits cylindrical, up to 120 cm long. Its leaves are fed nectar extrafoliares ants. Aromatic white flowers pollinated by moths and insects.
